January Book

Dear All,
In the last video blog I said that the next book was out in January 2008- I should have been more specific- I meant my next book- not the next Artemis book- which I am still working on- the next book is the historic sci-fi I spoke about called Airman- no Artemis for a while. Sorry.
Talk soon.
Eoin.

Also I am trying to learn the guitar- any hints from you nimble fingered youngsters?

Cool - What type of guitar? What style of music are you into? :) (I’m completely hopeless with instruments though, so no tips from me I’m afraid!)

Heheh, Eoin! Guitar! Another talent to your already crowded list?

I received lessons when I first started a few years ago, but I found this website extremely useful:

    http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/lessons/for_beginners/

Start with learning notes, chords and such, and play basic things, and constantly press yourself until you’re playing things that are getting harder and harder. Also, when you learn scales, play a few scales to warm up on… it helps, makes your fingers more flexible and you’ll find it easier to play.

I’d love to teach you, but, erm… you live in Ireland and I… don’t.

Aw, we still have keep waiting for the final Artemis book. I’m sure it’ll be worth it though, right?!!

Question: Will you be going in tour after Airman comes out, or are you going on tour after AF6?

    Thanks!

Hints? Well, if you’re going with the old fashion acoustic, play with your fingers, and not a pick. I find it sounds nicer. That’s just me though. =]

I’m glad you mentioned ‘The Lord Of The Rings’ in your blog, it really has to be read. It’s so hard to discuss it on these forums without it going back to the movies. Seriously guys, don’t be daunted by the size of the book- it’s worth it!

Can’t wait for Airman, it sounds awesome!
(My 15th birthday present is all sorted out, now.)

    Take care,
    Tig

P.S We proudly present todays subliminal message- Come to Australia. Tour in in Australia. Do a show in Australia. Please?- Repeat.

Ah, thanks for the clarification Mr.Colfer. :)

As for the guitar playing: a friend of mine gave me one of those cheap “song hits” books–I don’t know if they still sell those–and I basically just practiced the chords here and there. It’s easier to learn how to play when you’re playing your favorite songs–it keeps you motivated. XD Later on, I found out about Guitar Tabs on the internet, and learned about reading those… XD A good thirty minutes to an hour a day would do the trick…

[I haven't played the guitar for a long time now. I've left my guitar gathering dust in another country. :?]

I tried to learn the guitar once but it didn’t work out to well….but best of luck to you. I’m looking foward to any book that your going to put out. I love your artemis fowl series. I heard that you were going to put out one more book and end the series. Is that true? And are you going to write a sequel to the half-moon book? I thought that that was one of your best. Foaly rules!

  9. 9 Ryan D.

First off, I have to say that you are my favorite author, next to J.R.R. Tolkien. I love the Artemis Fowl books. And as far as playing the guitar goes, I’m currently learing it myself, so I don’t think I can help you to much there.
I am greatly anticipating the 6th Artemis book, I’m sure you will make it worth the wait, and I’m sure it will be a great end to the series.

    Your fan, Ryan.

    Dear Eoin,

Thanks for writng such great books.

thats okay!!! im sure airman will be good too!!
about the guitar: im learning it too at the moment and i’ve been told to just pick one or two songs and keep going over them until i can change chords right away. Just so you know, steel strings kind of hurt your fingers!!! :)
    bye for now,
    kathryn

  12. 12 Divet

The Guitar is hard on the fingers. (my dad and older siter play it)I have no pointers because I play violin.
Lord of the Rings and Brian Jaques rock my Socks! and I can’t wait for Airman to come.
Divet of Sherwood Frest signing out.

  13. 13 karla Menjivar

aw…and i was looking fowrd to it too :P
aw well anyway if you want to play guitar. you shuld lisen to some one can play it. try John mayer. he’s great1!^_^

  14. 14 Unorthodox Yo-Yo

I suppose we’ll live till the next Artemis book comes out. We’ll read Airman for the time being how about that?

For my birthday this year I got a book called “Wizards- Magical Tales from the Masters of Modern Fantasy.” Sound familiar, Eoin? I enjoyed “A Fowl Tale.” Love the name. ;) wink I’d recomend that to my fellow fantasy lovers, as well as “Lord of the Rings.” It’s one of those that you simply must read because it’s a classic. Read “The Hobbit” too. Those are the kind of books that you just need to get past the first chapter, then it’s fun.

I wish I knew guatar. I don’t have any pointers to give you. Does you musical brother play guatar? I want to learn to play bag pipes but I don’t think there are many chances of that happening. :P
    Till next time,
    Yo-Yo

  15. 15 Ann On A Moose

*sheesh* i was really looking forward to reading AF6…. :-(….
But i’ll be buying Airman anyways. I know what i want for Spring Fest, now!!
But srsly, when’s the Supernaturalist sequel coming up? **Edited for Spoilers**

And about playin the guitar - i, unfortunately, have nothin to do wid music apart from the fact that i sing in the bathroom, (loudly, and terribly off-tune, much to the agony of my sistah)……. but can’t ur bro Niall teach u? or is the sibling rivalry still alive and roarin within u two?? lolz…..

    till the next video blog,
    Fowl Wishes!

Umm.. I don’t know when all those comments have been submitted but Artemis Fowl 6 is already out, kinda
    Artemis Fowl
    Arctic Incident
    Eternity Code
    Opal Deception
    Lost Colony
Artemis Files - but does that count as a novel?
Anyways, good luck on learning the guitar, Mr. Colfer, I play and I say it’s always best to limit yourself to under, say, 2 hours a day, or else you get bored and unmotivated. But that’s probably because I’m only 12 and you’re… older…

must have read my mind… maybe i started a trend. I started playing guitar almost six months ago and it’s worth going to a teacher even just a few times so you can learn the technique, how to sit and which fingers to use, etc. Makes the whole thing alot easier.

I started with chords, and i mostly got the fingering right, but i had to relearn it all because there was something i was doing wrong. or rather, everything i was doing wrong lol! So yeah, my advice would be a few private or group lessons. Also don’t get a guitar with steel strings when you’re just beginning, and don’t start playing with a pick. Fingers are easier. Look forward to seeing your concert in a few years! *wink*

Damn about the Arty book. I reread the fifth today and now i’m dying for another. There’s only so many times you can read a series, you know, though i must say that Arty is more rereadable than most books… rereadable? is that even a word? oh well, you know what i mean.

Hey, i don’t get the end of AF5. With the bomb, and the whole time surge thingy. if you go forward for 49 hours then backward two minutes, would you essentially be going back 98 hours, or only 2 minutes. Neither way works, because if you go forward 49 then back 98, although Artemis could save Holly, you’re moving backwards in time and the bomb would never explode. If you’re only going back two minutes then Artemis couldn’t have saved Holly because even though she was only stabbed a minute previously, because of the time surge she’d actually been dead for 49 hours. Also the bomb would have exploded almost instantly because it only had eight minutes left when they left Teipei. It’s been bugging me, but then i tend to think about things too much. I always try to understand what happens in books instead of just accepting them.

ADVICE TO PEOPLE ON A QUEST FOR A GOOD BOOK: i feel your pain!… wander aimlessly around your local library. if you see a book that stands out, pick it up. that’s what i do… although i’ve kinda run outta books at my library! *sigh*

I love the books anyway, Artemis is a really good character! I find Minerva frustrating though… maybe i feel threatened. not by Arty, he’s a guy, but a girl who’s smarter than me… hehe! I’m actually trying to write a book of my own. It’s called Into Eternity. Maybe it’ll be on bookshelves one day!

    Bye!

    Hi EOIN!!

I’m a BIG, HUGE fan of yours FROM BRAZIL! I first met you in Sao Paulo and you gave me FOUR AUTOGRAPHS! And I gave you the book that I wrote, called “The Lost Books” Do you Remember!?
Since that day my admiration for you has grown up day by day, because you are a magnificent good person and a especial good writer. If all writers were like you the world would be so much better!
Pleaseeee, I know that you are a very busy person but give me an especial attention, i’m too far from Ireland, but i admire that magical place!
Well, WE BRAZILIANS ARE WAITING FOR YOU HERE AGAIN!!!!
    YOU ROCKS!!!!
And Congratulations for the epecial serie that you created, for me, it’s better than Harry Potter…!
    Till next time!!

    YOUR BIGGEST FAN FROM BRAZIL,
    Daniel Mainzer!!!

  19. 19 Cell

Oh no… Not another gushing fan…
What can I say? Well I suppose I will start out with “you know you’re a fan when…” I’ve read all of your books including ‘Spud Murphy’ (The only book I meekly checked out of the library “Its for my sister, I swear!”) and adore your writing style. I come from a family where puns are always welcome, no matter how “bad” they are …so needless to say I found them all quite hillarious. You’re books are truly inspiring to read and really get me inspired as an artist to visualize the scenes that you describe and then draw them out on paper.
I cant wait for your next book ‘Airman’ to come out, I think that science-fiction is really your best writing genre. They always make me think about the story a lot. When you write, the story is so well-developed that months after reading it I see or hear something that immediately reminds me of one of your books.
I suppose the purpose of this post was just to thank you for caring about your books: the characters in them, the gadgets, the plot… Most writers today just write in bulk for the money involved, but don’t realize that when they write their characters are becoming part of the readers life for better or worse. Thank you for taking your time and putting quality into your books, a good book is a good life experience after all. (which is about 13 good experiences unless I’m forgetting something!)

    -Yours, Cell.
P.S. Very sorry, but we AF fans grow slightly impatient with ‘rumors’ of the movie. Is there any chance you could enlighten our eagerly anticipating minds? Thanks!

  20. 20 Katie

I’m a newbie to the site, and I’m really enjoying it Eoin. I love the personal relationship you have here. As a longtime AF fan, I’m a little disappointed that the 6th one won’t come out in Jan., but I’ll survive lol. As for the guitar playing, I can’t help you there. I have no musical talent at all! :-). Good luck w/ the Airman book, I’m sure it will be amazing!.

    xoxo Katie

  21. 21 Jonathan,

hello its me again… the guy who live in the middle of nowhere (1km too far for the hi speed internet companys to bother). Lol.

Hmn i got to get back into writing my book, I was writing on my laptop, whilst on the bus in the morning and afternoon(i write better where most people can’t). I cant seam to start back up again though… I could write on my PC, but i write much better at around 10:00 - 11:00 PM (when im not supposed to be using my PC) I suppose I could write on paper, but im too obsessed with reading every night… oh well at least im doing something constructive.

The book is in the same setting as the Artemis’, for the reason that this is an Artemis book (but not quite) the main difference between my book and an Artemis, is that I added another main character (Meggie and the gang from Inkheart… but Dustfinger wanted to stay behind and play with his marten). So its really a half artemis… Artemis 5 1/2 if you want. Another big difference is that its my own writting style (i think) with many personality disorders added in straight from my mom’s psychology books (all used in context to make the person look foolish). N e ways there was an exerp of it on my website, the foule-jon 1, but i accidentaly broke it, il write a post when its running again though.

It hasent had one bad comment yet, and quite a few Artemis fans have read it too. But theres 1 flaw, you have to read the Artemis’ and the Inkhearts beforehand for it to make perfect sense…

n e ways i recently accidentaly untuned my guitare … and i cant get it tuned properly again. (It was tuned properly, but the electronic tuner said it wasnt, so i stupidly believed the tuner, and now its untuned and now anything i play sounds like one of those desert themes… quite complicated) hmn i do have a friend that’s been playing for a while… maybe he can help…

Meanwhile (while i try to figure out how to fix the incredibly complicated HTML code that keeps my website together… if anyone wants to read part of the book just send me an email (jonathanlahue@hotmail.com)

Hmn what’s wrong with steel strings? i got em and i dont find playing too hard (apart from having a badly tuned guitare).

Now im trying to figure out how to make 2400$ for a trip to germany in 2009… using as little manual labour as possible, and instead using what little cunning I have to spare. Ive gotten the idea of a lemonade stand (completely serious) but its raining out… ive also had the idea of monthly compounded interest, but thats taking its time… Ive also had the idea of starting a pottery business, because theres a huge natural source of pure clay in back of my house, but that didnt work because the art supplies store had no potters wheels… and no one seams to know how to find them… Hmn there’s the idea of making my treehouse look homely, and renting it out, but the initial investment is more than i have…

Ok now i think ive ran out of things to say

Bye and more good luck in playing guitare

    Jonathan

Eoin. i love reading your series. the Airman looks very good as well. The books were all fantastic. i read all of the Artemis Fowl books in 2 weeks. If you want to learn to play guitar just take it step by step. first thing i learned how to play was smoke on the water. very easy. Also, you could even play guitar hero. a video game with some good old fun with a guitar you have to play the right notes!!! your guitar is your controller! but it is a special guitar you have to buy. Still i think its worth it. my set came with a no hassle wireless guitar. it was only $100. But as i said, i love your books. The Artemis Fowl series i think is my favorite series. Your a smashing good author. My brother and i ourselves are into writing. He is into writing stories. as i am poems and stories. so far we have 2 300 page books on microsoft word. we havent gotten them published but we are working on it!!!!!! well, i have to go!!! keep up the good work with books and the movie!!!!!

  23. 23 Sapphire

Too bad your Artemis Fowl book’s not coming out so soon … I was looking forward to it soooo much !!! I wish the Artemis Fowl series would go on for ever and ever with millions of sequels , I love it so much ! ( That will never happen , of course . ) But seriously , the AF series is the best I’ve ever read , and I believe it will continue to be so for a long time to come . My friend introduced AF to me , and I’ve loved it ever since . I read all five books in a month ! Once I start , it’s really , really hard for me to stop !

Well , I don’t play the guitar , but I do play the piano . It’s not easy , though , to really learn how to play an instrument really well . It’s really time consuming and takes a lot of effort and determination . Anyway , good luck with your guitar and your books — Keep them coming !!! You’ll always be my favourite author ! ( By the way , I can’t imagine a book that’s better that AF . AF will always be the best ! But I’m sure other books by you are good too . ) Love your AF books FOREVER !!!

    Sapphire V.

    Hello,
I just moved to Sydney, Australia, about 1 month ago and its great! It has wonderful sites! My family and I used to travel all over the world to places like New York (America), Arcca (Ghana) and Bejing (China) for starters. But my parents have sworn that we are to settle and stay in Australia.

I learnt English really young and now I use it more than my own language! Artemis Fowl was 1 of the first books i read in english and after the first page I WAS HOOKED!

Eoin I do not know much about the guitar but I do have a keyboard and I have self taught myself over the years. So good luck on that aspect.

When you release ‘Airman’ I will be one of the first people to buy it. Lets hope or prayer or whatever you english do for ‘Airman’ to be a great book.

    Dear Mr. Colfer,
thanks for being such an unpredictable funny person! I believe no other writer ever created his own blog just to keep in touch with his fans!!!

Anyways, I’m a little curious =) I’ve been reading “The Wish List”, the whole “Artemis Fowl” serie and “The Supernaturalist”… the plots are really different and original, still they sound so alike!!! Why do the main characters have to be so lonely? That’s quite sad!!! Don’t you think someone can be worthy to end up in a book, even if he doesn’t have to struggle to find someone who likes him? (anyone who has an idea about that please answer =D )

PS: If anyone’s looking for a good fantasy novel try “The Neverending Story” by Michael Ende. Forget about the movie, the book is far better, current and deeper! Oh! And I also enjoyed reading both “Peter Pan” books by James M. Barrie (Thinkerbell’s description is so sweet!!! Mmh… maybe just because I’m obsessed with fairies… OK, never mind!!! =P )

    saluti from Italy

    Hi!!
well I will start this reply saying I’m sorry for my horrible Englis, but I am a baziliam reader how is trying to do a decent reply…

by the way I love the idea that I can let notes for one of my favorites author… I don’t know if you have time to read this, cause i know that if you could you would read all reviews but:

PLEASE I DON’T KNOW IF THIS HAPPENS IN ANOTHER PLACE, BUT HERE IN BRAZIL HAPPENS, OUR TRANSLATIONS ALWAYS TAKE A VERY LONG TIME TO BE READY, WE HAVE TO WAIT A LONG TIME TO CAN READ YOUR BOOKS, I DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR US, YOURS DESPERATES FANS, BUT IT’S FRUSTRATING FOR US… BUT I’M NOT COMPLAINING OF THE TRANSLATION CAUSE TRULY THEY ARE THE BEST, ALVES CALADO IS JUST WONDERFUL, IT’S ALL ABOUT TIME.. MAYBE YOU COULD ASK YOURS EDITORS FOR US…OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT

hey.. i’m not mad… I write this in caps lock just for ask attention… I love your books, you write af a magic way. I adore it.

  27. 27 Angie

    Dear Mr. Colfer,

Howdy! It is mandatory that I start out with that greeting because I’m a fan from Texas - born and reared, as we say - and I wanted to let you know that my husband and I (yes, we are OLD people) have really been enjoying your books. This is noteworthy because we rarely agree on books. I am a lifelong science fiction fan and he is a great fan of mystery/legal type thrillers. Other than those books by “She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named”, we rarely read the same things so Artemis has been a fun shared experience. I’ve also read the Supernaturalists and just finished The Wish List, both of which I really enjoyed and will now pass along to the hubby. I love to discover new authors who I can introduce to our 20 year-old daughter or our 4 year-old son without concerns about the age or content appropriate nature of the material. Please keep the stories coming!

    Angie from Texas, U.S.A.

  28. 28 True

I am grateful to hear that there will be another Artemis Fowl book! Oh, I do hope many more Artemis Fowl books. I am 43 years old and although I enjoy reading many genres, fantasy/science fiction is my greatest love (when it comes to reading). The Artemis Fowl series has become one of my 2 favorites. (the other favorite is NOT Harry Potter—she kills off too many special characters for my pleasure). I want to thank you for creating such a diverse group of characters who grow closer and more connected with each book. Thank you for the growing loyalties between them, and for the way that each book launches something special into the next book. I recommend Artemis Fowl to many. Please keep sending Artemis, Holly, Foaly, Mulch, Butler, and hopefully No 1 on more adventures!

  29. 29 Angie

Hey Mr. Colfer! I love the Artemis books, and lately i’ve had this bad habit of reading sieres where all of the books aren’t out yet. AND they’ve been my fave books so far in my 12 year old life. i just also wanted to say, i don’t quite get why sum people don’t like Minerva. I mean, she’s a little know-it-allish, but so is Arty. I love both charecters, and im really looking forwar to book 6!

  30. 30 Paige (again)

Hmm… Guitar, eh? Sadly, I’m more of a piano person, but my sister can use the guitar pretty well. I might be able to convince her to go and post a reply on this blog to help you out. Anyway, I’m getting excited on Airman. Sounds really awesome. I saw the cover on one of the videos here… Not only does it sound awesome, but it sure does look awesome as well! This writer in training can’t wait for the book!
    Your retarded fan, Paige.

  32. 32 Natalie

Hi Eoin!!! Ijust wanted to say that I love your books and I can’t wait until book six comes out! Is that going to be the last one? Anyways, I never really understood why people hate Minerva so much she seems fine to me! It would be really cute if her and Artemis got together in the next book, I used ot be an Artemis/Holly fan and I still am but we both know that it’s never going to happen! I’m fine with that, Artemis and Minerva make a very cute couple too. I think that your are a very good writer and I’m trying to write a book now, nothing that you would probably read though, I don’t know. It’s sort of like ‘Pride And Prejudice’ but with a twist, anyways, can’t wait for book six keep up the good work!!!!!!!!

And, sorry I’m horrible at playing the guitar, my brother has one but I’m afraid I’ll break it, I’m that bad!!!

    -Natalie

  33. 33 Leslie

    Hello Mr.Colfer,
I’m dying to read the next Artemis Fowl…
    Please write more soon.
Do you plan to do some tour again?
if yes..pls visit your fans here in Indonesia.
Never heard about it? It’s tropical country. You’ll like it.
    Find in the world map.
    And I’ll teach you guitar..hahaha..

About learning guitar, try to learn a classic song called Malaguenas. It’s easy but sounds really impressive. it consists of 3 chords, E F and G.
    Goodluck Mr. Colfer!

    Best Regards,
    Leslie

  34. 34 Nate Olshan

    Dear Eoin,

    Hello again Eoin,

I last saw you in London west end a while ago, I was the one with the huge stack of books for you to sign with your name, a greeting AND a happy birthday message! =P Hope I didnt give writers cramp, I need more books. I am an avid reader/writer and am top at my class in English (My teacher told me in private thet my work was the best she’d ever marked) but I just can’t seem to get the motivation to actually write my stories onto paper. I have about five promising books flying around my head and I really want to share them but I can’t! Any tips?
As well as airman and the next arty (I await both with high expectations) could you try and write a supernaturalists 2 and a return for fletcher? Thanks
I am of no musical skill unfortunately. Soz
