graphic novel

There seems to be a lot of interest in, and confusion about, the graphic novel. What exactly it is- the format- is it any good- etc. So I will try to answer some of these questions. The graphic novel is basically a full length comic version of the first book. Though ‘comic’ doesn’t really do it justice- this is a hundred and twenty pages of sumptuous artwork that sticks very faithfully to the original story. The book was adapted by me and Andrew Donkin a veteran comic author who has worked on Batman among others, and the artwork is by Giovanni Rigano, an Italian artist I have admired since his work on The Incredibles. Giovanni has created a spectacular world with spectacular characters- some are similar to how I imagined them and the rest are better. It is a strange thing to see my imagination rendered in colour- but I think Gio has done an amazing job. As a lifelong comic fan, I can’t wait to hold the volume in my hands. Some of you are worried about quality. Don’t be. The Artemis Fowl graphic novel will stand proud beside any work of art on the bookshelves. I know you think that I have to say all of this- but it’s true.

I can’t wait for it to come out! I’m really excited for something new! I think it’d be interesting to see the story told in a different way. I don’t really read graphic novels all that much, but I’m willing to give it a try!

  2. 2 Cassie

I’m looking very forward to seeing this when it’s finished. I read graphic novels a lot and just thinking about being able to read “Artemis Fowl” as a graphic novel… wow! :) I can’t wait to see what all the characters look like!

  3. 3 Matt

I, for one, can’t wait! It’s going to be amazing, reading and… looking at it at the same time. I can imagine it being somewhat as cool as seeing it as a movie (again, for which I can’t wait). After what… 5 years of reading and re-reading, it’ll be interesting to see if my ideas of the appearances of the character match that of the author and two iconic comic artists and writers. Will there be more if this one is a success?

And on the topic of the movie…

Eoooiiiiin! When’s the movie coming out? I want it nooooow!

    Ok, whine over. xD

  4. 4 Chelsea

I can’t wait to see the graphic novel! I always read graphic novels and comic books. I basically grew up on a diet of Archie and Anime. =P When I first heard that Artemis Fowl might come out in graphic novel form I was so hoping that it was true. I am sure that the artwork and quality will be beyond my wildest dreams. I have spent years reading, re-reading, and reading the books again. Having it with pictures (yeah, I’m just a big, uh, little kid a heart) will make it even better. More than anything, I just basically want to see Holly punching Artemis in full color. I’ll be able to that, right? You won’t be covering it up with a “pow” or “bang” will you? =) Oh, and I have to take the opportunity to whine about the movie. I want it /now/. xP (I’m sure the movie will be worth the wait.) Will there be graphic novels for any of the other books. I would love to have a graphic novel version of The Opal Deception, that is my favorite of the books.

    Hehe Matt.

But when is the Graphics Novel coming out?

And what does Artemis look like? Does he look as he does on the cover of the UK books?

  6. 6 Savvy

Can’t wait until it comes out! I want to see how the characters turn out! I’ll be outside the bookstore at midnight! :)

  7. 7 Beetle juice

Yay! Sounds really cool! Can’t wait for it to come out-this will end the debate about wether Foaly wears a tin pot or a tin hat on his head with my friends once and for all! *starts argument back up with friends again*

  8. 8 D_McOisín

    I can’t wait until it’s out because i’ve never read a graphic novel!! i can’t wait! when’s it out?

  9. 9 eoin

The graphic novel release date is September I think. As for the movie- still in the works. As soon as I know something I will post it.

  10. 10 Elaine Holmes

My favourite graphic novel author is Alan Moore, I didn’t know Donkin -just for the donuts, hehe =p. However, “The Incredibles” is a master piece, so I think this combination will work.

I’m not worried about how Artemis look like in the comic; but I’m scared about what the people in Hollywood could do with the characters in the movie. O_o

Eoin, do you know if there is any possibility to publish the graphic novel in Spain? You should know that our “Salón del Cómic” in Madrid and Barcelona are recognize as one of the bests in Europe. Maybe your editors would know it. ;-)

  11. 11 Elisabeth

I’m finding it really difficult to put up with looking forward to all of these Artemis Fowl goodies. First the movie, then the book, now the graphic novel.Pleeeease tell Master Fowl to stop messing about with this website and start scheming! I want to know what ‘Book 6′ is going to be!

I am displeased by all this waiting. I am not a patient person and when my patience is depleted I get angry. You wouldn’t like me when I’m angry…I’m going now, but I’ll be back. I will also stop quoting as it becomes rather tedious. Haha!

  12. 12 iesnoth

I can’t WAIT!!!! :) :) :) i’ve done a bunch of Artemis Fowl comic strips on my own, but I love the Incredibles, so this graphic novel should be…um… incredible! :P

But I really wanna see if Hollywood will stick to the books. Golly Gee! Can’t wait!

  13. 13 Hana

    Hi there!!! =D

I guess you won’t remember Eoin, but three years ago when you came to Brazil for our book fair (Bienal do Livro) in Sao Paulo, there was this nervous little girl who asked you “what tips would you give for children who want to follow your steps and become writers”, and you gave this amazing answer, looking her right into the eyes. “What a wonderful question!” you said, and everyone could see the spark on her eyes and the smile on her face.

That little girl was me, and I was only 13 back then. I remember that day as if it was yesterday, and am still a huge fan. Every word you said to me I kept in my mind until now (and that joke you made, about “feeling like JK Rolling” because of the great amount of people there, still makes me smile).

At that time I had only read your Artemis Fowl books - even because the other ones only came to Brazilian book stores long after the event - but on that day you became my second biggest idol (sorry, my dad is the first one =D).

‘Think I never got the chance to thank you for being so kind to me back then… all the things you said gave me courage to keep writing, and by the end of that year I got to publish my first newspaper article =]

You’re a great guy Eoin, and you’re an incredible writer as well. I really hope to see you again some day!!!

And I can’t wait to read/see the Artemis Fowl graphic novel too!! =D

    (( sorry, I wasn’t planning on writing that much… ))

  14. 14 Sunny

Eoin I am currently reading your book and I love it . Your book is just exciting I can`t wait for the movie to come out???

  15. 15 Nik

sheesh, I was worried when there was a gap after “The Opal Deception”. Now that “The Lost Colony” came out, I was certain you were finished. but a full-length GRAPHIC NOVEL???
    OMG I CAN’T WAIT!!!
(Now I can finally see what the People’s “Science” actually LOOKS like… and get on with drawing it! :D )
Hurry up, will you? (just kidding)

  16. 16 ash marie

i love artemis fowl and i love reading graphic novels, so naturally i am overwhelmingly happy about reading the artemis fowl graphic novels. i can’t wait to see how the characters look like. The movie, the sixth book and the graphic novels, I can’t wait!!. you are so good to us mr. colfer!!!

  17. 17 Hugh

Hi! =D I can’t believe I’m writing something a famous author will read! I absolutely can’t wait for the movie to come out,(I just found out about it here) and the graphic novel too,(The same) I too wonder what Artemis will look like, and since I live in Seattle WA.,U.S.A., I don’t have a clue what the UK cover looks like. It’s wonderful, well…..writing to you,(And everyone else)

    Hugh, 11

  18. 18 hermes

I can not wait for the graphic novel! As for the release date, you say september but amazon and other book stores say june. Which is true?
I really want to see how all the characters come out. Especially Foaly.

  19. 19 A Fan

I’m particularly looking forward to seeing what Foaly’s specially-modified chair looks like as well!

  20. 20 Valen Exalia

Awesome! I heard mention of the graphic novel, but it’s great to have some concrete news. Can’t wait to see all the characters and scenes. Thanks so much for allowing this to happen, Mr. Colfer, hardly any others try creative stuff like this. Can’t wait.

  21. 21 Paige

Dear Mr. Colfer, I am a big fan of your books (not just Artemis Fowl) and when I heard of the graphic novel, I was so excited! You see, I’m a big fan of graphic novels (actually, Japanese manga translated into English, which I consider exactly the same as comic books except for the fact that they have more pages and they have to be read left to right) and I’ve been reading and rereading Artemis Fowl 1-6 for a really long time. I hope I’ll be able to find one of the graphic novels here in the Philippines when it comes out! Lots of people are in love with Artemis Fowl here too so I guess it will be pretty hard to find a store that’s not sold out of them (XP). Anyway, I’m sure the graphic novel’s going to be a great success, and I hope there are going to be other graphic novels of the sequels too! Keep writing! (OR ELSE.)

  22. 22 Clara

I’m reading all these posts and hearing all this great stuff about the books. I feel like a lowbrow but I HAVE read all of your Artemis Fowl books. Not over and over, but I admit and agree they are intellectually stimulating. And the graphic novel is going to be sooo cool!

I also like manga and comics but I’m wary about most of them so this will be a wonderful relief.

*Sniff* I just read that w-wonderful post about “the shy little girl”. I wouldn’t even have the guts to ask for an autograph.

  23. 23 Apoc

I think an artemis fowl graphic novel would be awesome. I started on the books last week, and I had no idea they would be this addicting. I have been hooked from the first chapter of the first book. I have to say that I am a HUGE fan of graphic novels. I have stripped my local library dry of any graphic novels at all (And there are not that many there). I read the Star Wars Clone Wars graphics novels and they were awesome. Most of the time the characters looked like they did in the movies. And if you have a guy who worked on Batman, then I trust ya’ll implicitly to make it awesome. Batman is one opf my favourite graphic novel series, and he is definitely the BEST superheroes ( I guess he cant really qualify as that, can he?)
    Well, it was fun posting
    Apoc

  24. 24 Dragoness

I’m really interested in a graphic novel. A lot of people have misconceptions about them: but they really are works of art. Not at all like the dumb, over the top comic books one see documentaries about.
Have you ever seen ‘Abadazad’? It’s sorta a kid’s book, but it’s partially graphic… a good idea to help newer readers be interested in the book.
I’m so tired of mangas or D&D being the only books under the ‘Graphic Novel’s’ section of the book store. THANK YOU EOIN!!!
Anyhoo, I hope to do one myself some day, both write and illustrate, that is. I can’t wait to see what some of my most favorite novel-characters would look like! Esp. Foaly’s swivel-chair…. That has always confused me… and i don’t know why, but i always imagined Foal’s fur as being blue… go figure. (???)
-your 365th fan! (number one is WAY creepy. I got a life)

  25. 25 bleulockemoer

Being an English teacher and having been with dear Artemis since it was only one hardcover book, the minute I saw there was a graphic novel I almost jumped out of my seat.

I want to see a preview so bad…..Most of my students are waiting for this book, so please publish it!! (Just kidding, I know good things are worth the wait)

  26. 26 A really big fan

Hi, I have read all of the Artemis Fowl books, when i read them I pictured what was happening in my head. I know that a lot of what I pictured in my mind was unacurate so I cannot wait for the graphic novel! If the graphic novel is coming out in September then I cannot wait until September. I hope that its good, but all of your work is.
    Bye!!:)

  27. 27 Sarah Woodward

Stumbled across reference to the graphic novel of Artemis Fowl on amazon today. Fantastic news! I’m a Librarian in a Primary School and have three children of my own. Two of them need no encouragement to read, and have both devoured the conventional novels, the third is a trial! Recently bought him a Judge Dread graphic novel… he’s only 10 but I’m desperate!!! He loved it. Think I’ve found my hook so utterly delighted to see Artemis will soon be in graphic form. Hope it’s a huge hit and sets a trend for ‘child friendly’ graphic novels.

  28. 28 Mstar

When ever I find out that one of my favorite authors is writing a manga (graphic novel) I get so excited! I did the same thing when I discovered the Artemis manga that I did when I found out that Meg Cabot was doing a manga sequel to Avalon High- I let out a fangirl SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!! Believe me, you should be honored by the squee. Keep the books coming, PLEASE. Oh, and whenever you go on tour PLEASE, I beg of you, come to North Carolina, preferably the Charlotte area. It’s so annoying that none, and I do mean NONE, of my fave authors EVER come here. They may go to Virginia, and Tennessee, and South Carolina, and every other freakin’ state that borders NC, but thay never actually come here! Sorry if I sound bitter, but it’s a sore issue.

    Love ya lots,
    M*

P.S. I’m also glad that you started a blog- I’m an author blog addict.

  29. 29 Mesmer

Goodness! There’s going to be a graphic novel? That’s quite amusing because whenever I read a book, I like to try and recreate my favorite scenes by drawing them in manga form. I’m not that good, but I find it quite enjoyable to have my own view of the worlds in books. If your wondering what some people have conjured up as anime forms of Arty and his friends, you should see some of the fan sites! Its quite refreshing. There’s a particular illustration that depicts Artemis in a green suit holding a sign that reads, “Kiss me, I’m Irish” I absolutley love that picture. I’m always nervous when companies make movies and create visuals to go along with the books because unless there is a set image of a particular character or place, people are always going to imagine it differently and in their own way. It chills me when I’ve been imagining this one character all along and it turns out to resemble nothing of what I was thinking in the movies.

  30. 30 Niobe

    well - yes - hi again :)
matt said it- I WANT THE MOVIE! and THE SIXTH BOOK! and possibly the graphic novel, but i’ll get it anyway because you are on your way to becoming the TOP AUTHOR and therefore I must have all your works (BTW, i love The Wish List and the Supernaturalists - very original). It’s kind of the rules. I have all Tamora Pierce’s works, and all of J.K. Rowling’s work (who doesn’t?) and all of J.R.R. Tolkien’s works. I mean really. You obviously are next! and after you, Anthony Horowitz, if only for the fact he has put me out of my mind. :)
if you have any say in what goes on in the movie, make sure it’s TRUE TO THE BOOK! i ABHOR movies that slaughter books. they are my anathema. FIGHT BACK, MR. COLFER! RESISTANCE!

    thank you very much
    Niobe

  31. 31 Evia Keha

    Hello Eoin!
I cant thank you enough for artemis fowl…I dunno if hes the best role model but the way he talks and thinks reminds me a bit of myself (a bit of a cliche but true) well anyway im not sure if I will buy the graphic novel as ive never ever read anything like that and as I know the plot of the 1st book I am not sure if I will like it. well anyways I really hope you are not done with the book series cause even though in publishing terms it hasnt been a long time for the next book it still feels like a long time since ive finished reading “the lost colony” 4 times (and each of the other books 5 ) so please please give us some assurance as there will be a sequel book to the series so at least we know theres something to wait for and about the movie….I first heard about it like years ago but now its like it was gone like a wisp of smoke…dunno whats causing the delay but make it right! (sorry really anxious) well keep up the good work and maybe one day hopefully you will come to israel as there are quite alot of fans here…

    Sincerely
    Evia
