Airman : Launch Report from First News

Report!

“For Conor Broekhart, the only way out… is up…”

The words are still dancing in my ears after hearing the enthusiastic Eoin Colfer spin them into a story named “Airman”. Yr 6 were ecstatic to be part of this brilliant book’s launch. We barged excitedly into the spacey hanger of the Duxford Air Museum, ready for an incredible day of “Airman” adventures.  The museums huge collection of planes and helicopters transfixed our amazed faces. We were so excited we couldn’t stop talking! I felt like I was bubbling all over with anticipation and amazement so much that when we sat down in a stuffy, crowded talk room I couldn’t stop quivering!

Airman : “A Blast of a Tale”

Amanda Craig of The Times reviews Airman: I could almost hear 11-year-old boys retching into their school-bags over this account of a mere boy brilliant at fencing, a budding inventor, adored by pretty Princess Isabella and made a knight. Mercifully, though, everything in Conor’s charmed life goes wrong. Save your book tokens and fasten your seat-belts, because in Chapter 4 Airman takes off into a blast of a tale. Read the full review.

Eoin Colfer is one of the UK’s best-selling children’s authors. Best known for his phenomenally successful Artemis Fowl series, dubbed ‘Die Hard with Fairies’, his UK sales top 2.7 million copies and over 9 million copies worldwide. He is ranked alongside Philip Pullman, Jacqueline Wilson and Anthony Horowitz as one of the UK’s most popular and best-selling authors. Eoin’s books are published in 41 countries, including the US where they regularly top the New York Times bestseller charts and his explosive blend of action, comedy and fast-paced adventure has won the former primary school teacher millions of adoring fans the world over.

Airman is Eoin’s most recent novel and is a story of high adventure, romance and betrayal set in the 1880s at the time of the invention of flight. When Airman’s hero, Conor Broekhart, suffers the darkest of betrayals and finds himself incarcerated on the island of Great Saltee, he must win the race for flight to save his family and right a terrible wrong. A swashbuckling Count of Monte Cristo style adventure, Airman is a complete departure for Eoin who has previously written hi-tech, futuristic adventures best described as Hans Christian Anderson meets Miami Vice.

Airman : The Guardian Review

Airman is a good old-fashioned romp: swashbuckling high adventure in the mould of Kidnapped or The Count of Monte Cristo, packed with derring-do and gallant deeds, with no toilet humour or postmodern japery whatsoever. And it’s his strongest work yet.Read the Guardian review by SF Said
