January Book

Dear All,
In the last video blog I said that the next book was out in January 2008- I should have been more specific- I meant my next book- not the next Artemis book- which I am still working on- the next book is the historic sci-fi I spoke about called Airman- no Artemis for a while. Sorry.
Talk soon.
Eoin.

Also I am trying to learn the guitar- any hints from you nimble fingered youngsters?

Off to BEA

Hello All,
We are building quite a community here, which is nice to see. This site is giving me a real sense of the readers around the world- I feel all warm and fuzzy- but that could be the heated slippers. Did I read that someone did not know who Douglas Adams was? For shame. Go read immediately. The man was a genius and taken too soon.
I am off to New York for Book Expo America- so I should have some pictures from there and maybe a video or two when I get back.
Until then, I will be checking the notice board as regularly as I can and trying to reply to the more sensational comments.
Fowl wishes (is that a cheesy sign-off or ok?)

Hello Posters

Is posters the correct name- or bloggers? Bloggers sounds familiar. Anyway, it seems that a lot of you are young writers looking for a little advice. It is a difficult thing to give- as I see myself as still a beginner. I think the main thing is to read as much as you can- which everyone seems to be doing anyway. It sounds like a kung fu cliché- but you have to try and find your own voice- don’t try to be like anyone else- sometimes that unavoidably happens- but you shouldn’t set out to write the next Discworld or the next LOTR. Find a little something original and build on it.
I am working on Artemis 6 at the moment- no title yet. I am trying to tie up a lot of loose ends in this one- why Artemis is the way he is. Holly’s past. Mulch’s behind. A few new characters but mostly old ones. So far we have visited Finland, Ireland and Morocco. So a nice mix there.
More news when I have some.

graphic novel

There seems to be a lot of interest in, and confusion about, the graphic novel. What exactly it is- the format- is it any good- etc. So I will try to answer some of these questions. The graphic novel is basically a full length comic version of the first book. Though ‘comic’ doesn’t really do it justice- this is a hundred and twenty pages of sumptuous artwork that sticks very faithfully to the original story. The book was adapted by me and Andrew Donkin a veteran comic author who has worked on Batman among others, and the artwork is by Giovanni Rigano, an Italian artist I have admired since his work on The Incredibles. Giovanni has created a spectacular world with spectacular characters- some are similar to how I imagined them and the rest are better. It is a strange thing to see my imagination rendered in colour- but I think Gio has done an amazing job. As a lifelong comic fan, I can’t wait to hold the volume in my hands. Some of you are worried about quality. Don’t be. The Artemis Fowl graphic novel will stand proud beside any work of art on the bookshelves. I know you think that I have to say all of this- but it’s true.

Welcome to the new site

Hello Fowl fans,
Welcome to the new site. It is tres snazzy, non? I think there should be plenty here to keep you busy for the time being. Check back for regular updates on the blog. Is this a blog? I am old fashioned and can’t help thinking of it as a diary. Anyway- latest news- just finished the next book. Not an Artemis but very exciting anyway. Sort of a historic sci fi actioner (with comedy). Next project Artemis 6.
Talk soon.
Eoin.

Airman Launch

Eoin Colfer launches his debut novel “Airman” today. Colfer plans to follow up this novel with a new series of books about a teenage criminal mastermind. When asked if he thought a series with a criminal central character would find favour with young readers he replied “Only time will tell!” Wexford People 07.08.02 Time is flying by!
