Sebastian Barry and Eoin Colfer Win Independent Booksellers’ Prize

Independent Bookshop Customers vote for their Favourite Book of the Year
Part of Independent Booksellers’ Week 2009

Adult category winner: Sebastian Barry, The Secret Scripture (Faber & Faber)
Children’s category winner: Eoin Colfer, Artemis Fowl and The Time Paradox (Puffin)

The Booksellers Association of the UK and Ireland tonight announced The Secret Scripture (Faber) by Sebastian Barry and Artemis Fowl and The Time Paradox (Puffin) by Eoin Colfer as winners of the nationwide Independent Booksellers’ Book Prize 2009, as voted for by independent bookshop customers, in support of Independent Booksellers’ Week which ran from 15th to 22nd June 2009.

The Independent Booksellers’ Book Prize – which is organised by The Booksellers Association, the national trade association for booksellers, and is now in its third year of existence – was supported by hundreds of independent bookshops throughout the country. The prizes were presented this evening at The Bookseller Retail Awards at The Natural History Museum, London.

Independent bookshop customers were invited to vote for their favourite book of the year from a shortlist of ten adult and ten children’s books – which were voted for by Booksellers Association members from a long list derived from sales data that specifically relates to independent bookshops. Votes to choose the winners were cast in independent bookshops, by post or by email between mid June and the end of August 2009.

Meryl Halls, Head of Membership Service at The Booksellers Association, comments: “Independent Booksellers Week celebrates quality, talent, creativity and passion for books and reading, and we are delighted that it sparked such energy and enthusiasm from local book shops and readers in picking their Favourite Book of the Year. We would like to congratulate both Sebastian and Eoin and thank everyone who voted.”

On discovering that The Secret Scripture had won the adult category, Sebastian Barry said: “This is very wonderful news indeed because the independent booksellers are the Buzz Aldrins, the Daniel Boones of the trade. They really are they heart of the matter. They keep things where they should be and I’m deeply moved that readers in Great Britain voted for my book.”

On winning the children’s category, Eoin Colfer commented: “I am delighted to have won this award for Artemis, especially when it comes from the independent booksellers who know what they’re talking about. This award will take pride of place on the mantelpiece where I used to keep my youngest son.”

Last year, Notes from an Exhibition (HarperPerennial) by Patrick Gale won the adult prize and the children’s award went to Robert Muchamore for his book The Sleepwalker (CHERUB).

Fowl Play at Twycross Zoo – Press Release

PRESS RELEASE . . . PRESS RELEASE. . . PRESS RELEASE . . .

Twycross, Tuesday 31st March 2009

Fowl Play at Twycross Zoo

A llama has disappeared from Twycross Zoo. The seventy-year-old llama called Beckett was last seen in its enclosure on the morning of Tuesday 31st March and was discovered to have gone missing by zookeeper Liz Cubberley. At the scene of the disappearance a photo of a short, round and hairy, bearded dwarf leprechaun riding Beckett was found and is being used as evidence in the case to discover Beckett’s whereabouts.

Zookeeper Liz Cubberely says, ‘I went to feed him as normal and discovered his enclosure had been completely dug over like a giant mole had been at work in the night, leaving a huge 30 foot mound of earth and a half a mile tunnel leading to the car park. I am very concerned for Beckett’s welfare and would like to appeal to the general public to help find and return him to his home.’

Staff at Twycross Zoo can confirm that CCTV footage has been carefully analyzed and has revealed that a man in his forties with grey hair carrying a notebook and pen was seen at the zoo on the morning of Wed 31st March, shortly before Beckett was discovered missing, acting suspiciously. The man has been unofficially identified as internationally bestselling children’s author of the Artemis Fowl series, Eoin Colfer. Mr Colfer’s latest book, Artemis Fowl and the Time Paradox, deals with the theme of extinct species particularly focusing on one of the world’s most endangered primates, the silky sifaka lemur of Madagascar, which is needed to provide the antidote to a fatal disease contracted by Artemis Fowl’s mother.

Mr Colfer is being questioned in connection with the disappearance and gave the following statement, ‘I am an animal lover and an environmentalist. My latest book, Artemis Fowl and the Time Paradox, bemoans the loss of thousands of endangered species across the globe, hopefully encouraging the legions of children who read my books to take a greater interest in the protection of animals and our natural world. I was at Twycross Zoo to study their collection of primate species, particularly the lemurs, who play an important role in my book.’

Authorities and zoo staff are trying to discover if there is a link between Mr Colfer’s research into lemurs and the disappearance of Beckett, the llama.

Security at the zoo have informed us that there should be some news by 12 noon on Wednesday 1st April.

Llama Incident – Update

Following the further questions we’ve received following the Nickelodeon broadcasts, once again we feel we need to disassociate this site and Mr Colfer from anything to do with this zoo escape/llama kidnapping/theft nonsense. Matt over at AFC seems to have thrown a little more light on the subject but as of this time we have no statements to make on this matter.

In other news Eoin has created a Twitter account so you can check that for the latest updates. Daily Twitter digests will also be published via this blog.

Thank you,

PS: Please, no more llama emails!!!

“LlamaGate” Controversy

In light of the recent deluge of emails and messages from llama fans we feel the need to deny any involvement in the incident at Twycross Zoo. It’s quite ridiculous to think that an author of Mr. Colfer’s standing would have anything to do with such a bizarre event. We are unable to confirm whether Mr Colfer was anywhere near Twycross at the time.

If you have questions about this matter please direct them towards this site:

Thank you.
